Barista Training

— PROBLEM TO SOLVE

Current barista training is outdated, inefficient, and misaligned with Starbucks standards. It results in high training labor costs, inconsistent partner experience, and operational inefficiencies.

The New Barista Essentials Training project is a strategic initiative to replace the current 30/60/180-day training in U.S. and Canada with a more modernized and effective Starbucks foundational barista training program. This new training program aims to improve partner experience, reduce training labor hours, and enhance operational consistency across U.S. and Canada company-operated coffeehouses.

VISION

What's different

We designed this training to maximize barista learning retention and develop proficiency by the end of the training. It intentionally layers learning modules so baristas can practice, repeat, and grow their abilities without feeling overwhelmed. Baristas will work shoulder-to-shoulder with their barista trainer throughout their training to solidify learnings and ask questions along the way.

MEASURING SUCCESS

Faster readiness, consistent execution, and confident partners.

Reduced time to competency

Improved consistency

Partner
retention

by working with their barista trainer, giving partners practice time, and validating proficiency through assessments we decreased average time to certification.

by aligning our training to Starbucks Standards we've increased beverage quality scores, routine task adherence, and increased consistency across coffeehouses.

by enhancing the training experience, we've impacted partner engagement by providing a modern, relevant training improving early tenure retention in the first 60 to 90 days.
